LightWave Saber Bass VL 5-String Fretless, Transparent Amber

Bass: Lightwave Saber Bass, VL 5 string, Transparent Amber First off, the finish. Simply gorgeous. The back of the neck I would describe as a satin finish, very smooth. The color is not quite as yellow as pictured, but rather a richer, mellow, sun shining on fields of golden wheat, or what a posh interior decorator might call burnt umber, hints of orange are very strong. Visually, I get comments all the time when I'm gigging about what a beautiful bass it is, and they're correct. Plus, if you missed it, that little half moon towards the top of the body is actually a sound hole of sorts. It's what I describe as a semi hollow body, which I think just adds to it's intrigue. When I ordered the bass, since it was a fretless, I also ordered some Thomastik-Infeld flatwound bass strings, to really accentuate that smooth fretless sound. The range of tone I'm still learning to master, it's not your typical tone setup with knobs, so it takes a little playing around with to really dial in your tone, but it's there. (One thing that intrigues me about using light sensors to pick up string vibration rather than magnetic, is that I don't believe I'm confined to using strictly metallic strings. And I love the Thomastik-Infeld flatwound bass strings, but I was toying around with the idea of maybe putting on some real cat gut or synthetic strings.) Playability is great. Occasionally while out on a gig, I'll let one of my friends get up and play, not even warning them they are stepping into a fretless.…

Lakland Skyline Series L5501LEMTB 5-Strings Bass Guitar, Translucent Blue

The US Made Lakland basses hover at just over two grand and change. The Skyline series is considerably more affordable while still delivering much of the mojo of their American made brethren. I bought my 55-01 back in 2006 and I have played it extensively. I can honestly say that it is a great bass particularly when the price is considered. The Skyline 55-01 is one of those rare instruments that really does not need any modifications to sound great; it sounds great and most of all plays great right out of the box. If you need made in the USA stamped on the instrument this may not be for you, but you are simply looking for a killer bass that will not set you back on your mortgage payments, this is the bass for you.

Fender American Standard Jazz Bass® V (Five String), Olympic White, Rosewood Fretboard

This comment is directed at those who buy in "AustinBazaar". I saved a lot of money to buy the bass of my dreams. When I opened my order I realized I had a defect in the base where the neck is screwed, but his case was perfect, confirming it was shipped defective from "Austin B." without proper inspection. Amazon.com appreciate the interest by trying to cover the total return of the damaged item and respond to every email I wrote. But I could not return the bass because the transfer from Venezuela to Miami is very expensive. Amazon reinstated me on 20% of "1400.00 U.S.," which was like giving candy to soothe a child who received a damaged toy.Amazon really responded and tried to solve my problem immediately as I expected. Thank you.AUSTIN BAZAAR! Thanks for making my first purchase from Amazon.com so disappointing experience by sending a bass defective. thanks thanks thanks

Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Bass with Gigbag, Plainn Black

Me,,, a long time pro player, owned every bass out there for the last 25 years.I never liked the boxie look of the early Steinbergers but liked the look of the newer Synapse, took a shot and ordered one sight unseen, never played one either.Bottom line,, LOVE my flat black 4 string Synapse, I string all my bass's B-E-A-D and the Synapse had no problem accepting the BEAD strings in place of the EADG strings,, Im using the Steinberger double ball 5 string set (I throw the G string in the garbage can). This bass produces a large number of different tones, its super easy to play and I think it looks very cool. One thing,, the strap button location on the backside of the bass sucks,,, I put my own strap button on the bottom of the bass body and that made a big difference for the better.Other than having to change the strap button location I cant think of anything negitive to say about the Synapse.I own many other bass's, mostly Fenders, but this new Synapse might become my main bass.Amazon had the best price and with one day shipping I had it in One Day.CheersDavyo

Fender American Special Jazz Bass® Electric Guitar, Candy Apple Red, Maple Fretboard

PLEASE NOTE! Since writing this review, I returned my American Special, ONLY because I got a very good deal on an American Standard Jazz bass which has a very good case and does have a slightly more comfortable neck and a few other differences. However, I stand by the following review of the American Special, and (if I could afford it), I'd own 'both' basses!Regrettably, I just had to put my Fender American Special Jazz bass down in order to type this review! I doubt Amazon.com would mind me mentioning that I bought this elsewhere, since I live in the Toronto area, and they don't ship these to Canada. Aside from that, it was the exact same price, and exact same model as pictured here, for that matter.Like most guitars and basses made by Fender and Gibson, etc., they tend to sit in a warehouse somewhere, neatly packed away in a sturdy stapled cardboard box (from their respective companies), until a store, Amazon or whomever orders some to replenish their stock. If it's a matter of months, or in some cases, a year or two, the string tension on the neck will create an uncomfortable 'bow' from not being moved or played at all. I ordered mine special, because my local music store (Long and Mcquade) didn't stock the red with Maple neck. And yes, the action was too high. However, since I prefer to do my own adjustments, I found the Fender T-Allen adjustment wrench to be a breeze to use, and within a matter of a few minutes, I had the action nice and low, (the way I like it), and it…

Schecter Stiletto Elite-5 Bass Guitar (5 String, See-Thru Black)

The Schecter Stiletto Elite bass is an outstanding instrument. Out of the box, it required only modest set up to make it playable. (I'm still taking it to my local luthier for a decent setup). I played it in a large-venue church setting this weekend, and the tonal quality was remarkable. The action was low and sleek; the bass almost played itself. The frets felts good and never got in the way. The finish is deep and rich, and the pictures just don't do it justice. The low B is the most tight and solid I've ever heard on any bass. Bottom line is this: Buy this bass, you won't be sorry.

Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass® V (Five String), Brown Sunburst, Rosewood Fretboard

I have been playing bass for over 25 years and have played almost everything out there... I wanted a 5-string in 34" scale that didn't have a neck that was a half a mile wide, and the Deluxe Active V had those specs plus the active EQ, which was icing on the cake. A Jazz bass is already an instrument capable of a wide variety of tone and styles, and the active EQ gives you all of the tone-shaping control you need right at your fingers without having to go to the amp or an external EQ. I tried some Squier basses but found them to have high action; this one plays great and a very good value compared to its American-made counterpart which costs twice as much. Highly recommended if you are looking for a versatile 5-string that is comfortable to hold and play.

Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass®, Black, Maple Fretboard

This bass is loaded to the max,and an excellant reproduction of the bass that Getty Lee (RUSH) is known for using live and in the recording studio. What I might add is a pretty good price for such quality. This FENDER JAZZ bass has a 1 piece maple neck with black binding and black rectangular fret markers. 20 medium jumbo frets with a 9.50''neck radius. 2 Vintage jazz bass single coil pick ups and a vintage Leo Quan Bad Ass II Bridge. This also Boasts an alder body and vintage 70's stamped open gear tuning machines. This bass was a favorite among musicians for many reasons. quality workmanship, great tone sparkle and these were very road worthy, able to widthstand the abuse that comes with being a touring band. I would suggest trying this bass out even if you dont play a Fender.

LightWave Saber Bass SL 5-String Fretless, UltraBlack

The first thing I did was put TI Jazz flats on this bass. The stock roundwounds were very nice (have no idea what brand), but the flats are what I really wanted.Action of the bass is very low and fast. The neck adjusted very well and easily to dead flat, right where I like it. The range of tones available is wide, setup of optics after changing strings is easy. The manual is clear and simple as to how this beast is different from regular pickups. The bass is very light weight and well balanced.Customer service at Lightwave was outstanding answering my numerous questions prior to sale. Some places in the finish were not quite up to snuff (a few lines in the finish where it appeared deeper grain had not been filled) and the B string bridge is just a hint out of alignment with the other four. Those two items notwithstanding, this is a gigging bass and functions very well. All in all, it's a keeper with a very smooth feel in the neck and a solid potent sound.
